Joining the Legacy Initiative movement is easy—and the rewards are countless. You can work on your own or with a group to identify and record African American elders in your community who are willing to share their memories for posterity.

An Elder, or Legacy Keeper, may be your relative, your neighbor, your teacher, or your minister. Legacy Keepers share one thing in common: They lived through tumultuous times and have the memories and observations to prove it.

Participating in the Legacy Initiative does not require that you possess an advanced degree or official credentials. It does require a will to start–and start soon. Our elders are a finite resource. Once they’re gone, the precious memories they hold are gone, too. The time for this movement is now.
